I’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of the Saltiga 35 since I first saw prototypes of it over a year ago at the Osaka fishing show and the wait has been well worth it because this is the nicest reel in its class ever made. The 35 jigging size fits right in as a deep water slow pitch reel or medium size speed jigging reel for a variety of species like yellowtail, bluefin and yellowfin tuna. It has plenty of drag to fish up to 80lb, although I’d recommend a lighter test with an aggressive drag setting to get the most out of the line capacity. Paired with PE4 braid which typically has a breaking test of 70lbs you’d have enough line to get 100lb+ tuna daytime, or with PE5/6 for pulling big yellowtail and grouper away from structure.
This reel has a lot of jigging specific features like an auto-engaging clutch, spool lock for when you get snagged on the bottom and a very narrow spool to make guiding the line an afterthought.
They made the handle of this reel bigger than the 15 while also maintaining the ergonomic frame design, and it feels great to use. The length of the handle arm has been increased to an adjustable 100-110mm which gives you the torque you need when fighting fish and reducing fatigue when jigging. The drag has an audible click so you know when it’s being taken which is a feature I’ve come to love on my higher end low profile and jigging reels. If that wasn’t enough they also have 2 anti-reverse bearings and a mechanical pawl inside for durability, 2 ball bearings to support the pinion on each side and an anode plate to prevent corrosion from spreading.
Even if you have little interest in jigging, this is a reel worth picking up and feeling at the shop. There’s nothing on the market that feels this smooth, especially in this size.
